Willow Wild Cemetery was established in 1878. My great-great-great grandparents, Dr. William C. and Elizabeth L. Whitsett, and two of their children, Elizabeth and Joseph, are buried there.

My 3x great-grandparents, Dr. William Crawford Whitsett and his
wife, Elizabeth (Edmunds) Whitsett, moved to Bonham from Glasgow, Kentucky,
in 1854, and was the local physician as well as a farmer. One of their
sons, William E. Whitsett, eventually moved to Cherokee Nation where he
married Nancy Lattimore. After her death in 1887, he sent his daughter,
Mary Whitsett, back to Bonham to live with his brother, Joseph Haden
Whitsett. While living in Bonham, she met William Polk Akin. They married
in 1891, and eventually settled in Sallisaw, Cherokee Nation (in what was
then Indian Territory).

Joseph, a.k.a. “Uncle Hade” lived to be 103 and was one of the last
surviving Confederate soldiers from the Civil War. He was the brother of my great-great grandfather, William E. Whitsett. [There is a discrepancy
on his birth year; his tombstone has 1848, but his death certificate as
well as newspaper articles noted his birth year as 1847.]
