CEMETERY SIGN

This is a small family cemetery with approximately 150 graves. Most, if not all, are related in some way to the Lattimore family. The oldest grave is Captain John Lattimore's (1745-1821). Captain John was said to have fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. After the war he settled in the area in what was then Rutherford County, North Carolina (now Cleveland County). He married Jemima Stockton and they had three children: Daniel, John (my 4x great grandfather) and Rachel. After Captain John's death in 1821, his wife, Jemima, son, John, daughter, Rachel, and their families moved to Tennessee. Only son, Daniel, remained in North Carolina and it's mostly his descendants who are buried in this family cemetery.

Once we arrived at the cemetery, we instantly knew we were in the right place. The majority of the tombstones had "Lattimore" etched into the granite. It is an active cemetery and members of the Lattimore family continue to be buried here.

JOHN LATTIMORE HOUSE & GRAVE
The house known as the John Lattimore House is located near the family cemetery. The house has been designated as part of the National Register of Historic Places and continues to be owned by the Lattimore family. On October 1, 1824, father Daniel Lattimore sold 210 acres of his 355-acre home tract to his son John for $500. John Lattimore (1801-1877) occupied the home for approximately half a century and gave his name to the house. Known to the family as "Big John," he may have lived in the house before his marriage to Isabella Carson on June 8, 1830. Over the next 20 years, at least 11 children were born and as the family grew, so did the house.

CHARLES LATTIMORE ELLIOT (1930-2010)
A special mention needs to be made for Charles Lattimore Elliott. He was an avid genealogist and spent many years researching the Lattimore family. Charlie was a member of the Broad River Genealogical Society and allowed the society to publish his research website, The Descendants of John Lattimore, Sr. His work has helped me tremendously in understanding the Lattimore family and continues to be a valuable tool for coming generations of researchers.

TOWN OF LATTIMORE
Located nearby is the small town of Lattimore. According to The Historical and Architectural Resources of Cleveland County, North Carolina by Brian Eades published in 1998, the town of Lattimore was named for Audley Lattimore (1845-1931), son of John Lattimore, grandson of Daniel Lattimore, and great grandson of Captain John Lattimore. Audley served as the first mayor, the first depot agent, and operated the post office out of his home.
