Akins Cemetery

Visited July 11, 2010. | Located off of Highway 101 in Akins, Oklahoma.

Despite the name of Akins Cemetery, there are no relatives with the last name of Akin buried here.  The cemetery got its name by being in the city of Akins, Oklahoma.

Many descendents of Samuel Lattimore (great, great, great grandfather and second husband of Akey Walkingstick) are buried here.

Nancy Faulkner Lattimore
1851 - 1924

Nancy Lattimore was married to Samuel Lattimore (Abt. 1847-1883), son of Samuel Lattimore and  Akey Walkingstick, brother of Nancy Lattimore Whitsett (great, great grandmother).  She is often mistakenly noted as having been married to the elder Samuel Lattimore.  This family's genealogy does get confusing in that there are many Samuel Lattimores to try to keep straight.  After her husband Samuel's death, Nancy married a man with the last name of Cornelius.

(SON OF SAMUEL LATTIMORE AND NANCY FAULKNER)
Ezekiel S. Lathimore
December 5, 1888 - January 10, 1930

NOTE: This headstone confuses me for a variety of reasons and I'm not sure now that it is the correct grave.  The birth year is definitely wrong.  Ezekiel (son of Samuel Lattimore and Nancy Faulkner) was born around 1870 according to his Dawes packet.  It's possible that this could be a grave of his son or a son of another relative, although I have not found another Ezekiel with these dates.  Also, the last name on the headstone is "Lathimore." This grave is referenced as being Ezekiel's in many genealogical sources and  I'm not sure what to make of this.  It could be the wrong grave altogether or have the name misspelled and the dates wrong.

The next photo is of Mary E. Lattimore's grave.  She was definitely the wife of Ezekiel.

Charley Arthur Floyd
aka "Pretty Boy Floyd"
February 3, 1904 - October 22, 1934
Pretty Boy Floyd's grave is probably the most popular in Akins Cemetery. He is somewhat related to our family. His sister, Mary Floyd, married Perry Lee Lattimore, great grandson of Samuel & Akey (Walkingstick) Lattimore.

Buffington Cemetery

Visited July 11, 2010. | Located off Buffington Road in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.

Buffington Cemetery is a small cemetery with two ancestral graves: James Colby and Alex R. Ross.

This photo shows both graves, which are located next to each other.

Alex R. Ross
Son of David Watie Ross and Mary Sutton, Grandson of Thomas Ross and Annie Seabolt, Great Grandson of Akey Walkingstick and David Ross (Akey's first husband)

James L. Colby
September 6, 1863 - June 28, 1910
James was a U.S. Marshall in Indian Territory
Son of Matilda Ross and John Colby, Grandson of Akey Walkingstick and David Ross (Akey's first husband). Not much is known about Matilda Ross.  She was married to John Colby and then later to William Barnes with whom she had a daughter, Stella.  Most references I've seen refer to her as Matilda Barnes.

Dodd City Cemetery

Visited February 19, 1017. | Located on E. Sam Rayburn Drive in Dodd City, Texas (5 miles from Bonham).

Dodd City Cemetery was established in 1842 and is where my great-great grandparents, Eliezer F. and Novaline R. Akin, are buried along with their two daughters, Myrtie Estes and Emma Thompson.

Eliezer Franklin Akin and Novaline Polk Akin (my 2x great-grandparents) moved to Bonham, Texas, sometime around 1890. They were from the Carter’s Creek area in Tennessee and had two daughters, Myrtie and Emma, and a son (my great grandfather), William Polk Akin. Sadly, Eliezer would die shortly after arriving in Texas. William Polk Akin married Mary Whitsett in 1891, and they moved to be closer to her family in Sallisaw, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.   Novaline would outlive both of her daughters and end up living with her granddaughter, Vivian Estes.

Eliezer Franklin Akin (July 31, 1823 – December 12, 1890)

My great-great grandfather - father of William Polk Akin, grandfather of Alfred Nicholson Akin, great grandfather of Peter, Don & Earl Akin

[The year of death on his tombstone is clearly 1897, yet the Family Bible and his obituary record 1890 as his year of death.  I'm not sure why his tombstone has this error.]

NOVALINE REBECCA POLK MILLER AKIN
Novaline Rebecca (Polk) (Miller) Akin (January 25, 1831 - October 31, 1915)

My great-great grandmother - mother of William Polk Akin, grandmother of Alfred Nicholson Akin, great grandmother of Peter, Don & Earl Akin.

MYRTIE LEE AKIN ESTES
MYRTIE LEE ESTES

Myrtie Lee (Akin) Estes (December 29, 1864 – January 28, 1897)
Myrtie Lee Estes (October 24, 1896 – May 31, 1908)

Sister of William Polk Akin; daughter of Eliezer and Novaline Akin.
Myrtie was buried with her daughter Myrtie Lee Estes who died at age 11 of a brain tumor.

EMMA AKIN THOMPSON

Emma (Akin) Thompson (December 15, 1871 – November 2, 1901)

Sister of William Polk Akin; daughter of Eliezer and Novaline Akin.

[Based on other records (Bible and census) Emma's middle initial should most likely be "O" for Ophelia.  I have seen "Winifred" also as a middle name, but in the Bible record kept by Emma's mother, Novaline Akin, "Ophelia" is noted as the middle name.]

Fort Gibson National Cemetery is the final resting place of men and women who played major roles in the development of the Western frontier. The cemetery remains active and contains the graves of more than 19,000 people, most of them men and women who served in the U.S. Military.

Charles Basinger and Joyce Akin Basinger (great aunt, sister of Alfred Akin, daughter of William Polk Akin and Mary Whitsett Akin) are buried here.  Charles served in World War I.

One of the best features of this cemetery is this computerized grave locator.
